Laurence Housman (1865–1959) was an English writer, playwright, poet, illustrator, and social reformer whose career spanned more than six decades. A versatile literary figure, he authored novels, short stories, plays, children’s books, and historical works, while also illustrating many of his own publications. Housman was widely respected for his imaginative retellings of biblical and historical themes, including A Farm in Fairyland and The Little Plays of St. Francis. Beyond literature, he was an active advocate for women’s suffrage and other social causes, using both his writing and public speaking to promote equality and civic reform. Today, he is remembered for his diverse literary contributions and his commitment to combining artistic expression with public service.
