Plutarch (c. 46 – c. 119 CE) was a Greek historian, biographer, essayist, and philosopher whose writings became some of the most influential works of the ancient world. Born in Chaeronea in Boeotia during the Roman Empire, he combined Greek intellectual traditions with an interest in Roman history and culture. His best-known work, Parallel Lives, presents paired biographies of notable Greek and Roman leaders, exploring their character, achievements, and moral qualities rather than simply recounting historical events. He also wrote the Moralia, a diverse collection of essays on ethics, religion, politics, education, and everyday life. Plutarch’s writings have shaped historical scholarship, political thought, and literature for nearly two millennia, influencing generations of readers, statesmen, and authors from the Renaissance to the present day.
