Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian whose achievements extended far beyond the Arctic. Trained as a zoologist, he gained international recognition for pioneering polar expeditions, including the first successful crossing of Greenland’s interior and the Fram expedition, which advanced scientific understanding of the Arctic. Following his exploration career, Nansen became a leading advocate for refugees and displaced people after World War I, serving as the League of Nations’ first High Commissioner for Refugees. His humanitarian efforts, including the creation of the “Nansen passport” for stateless persons, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922. Through his scientific research, exploration, and commitment to humanitarian causes, Nansen left a lasting legacy in geography, international diplomacy, and human rights.
